Viewpoint: Easy ways to volunteer your PR skills

Ben Matthews

Ben Matthews introduces the BrightWorks programme, helping you help charities to communicate.

Charities are facing unrivalled challenges, with donations down year-on-year and workers becoming increasingly stretched. But you could help, by offering your communication skills to resource-strapped organisations, even if you yourself have only a little time to spare.

To help with this process we set up BrightWorks, a simple way to find PR, marketing, social media, design, multimedia or copywriting tasks that charities need help with. BrightWorks is a free, online, ‘microvolunteering’ application that can help you support causes you’re passion about.

But, we hear you shout, what is microvolunteering?

Well, microvolunteering tasks are short, brief jobs that even the busiest person can complete relatively quickly, such as writing a press release, drafting a quick marketing plan, designing an newsletter or simply tweeting about a charity. By focusing on such tasks, BrightWorks enables even the busiest PR experts to offer some help, in a way and from a location that suits their existing schedule and commitments.

Don’t think you’ve got the time? You’d be surprised. And we deliberately set up BrightWorks so that busy people could take on managable tasks which demand only a little time, but which deliver big benefits to the charity.

Plus, volunteering with us can benefit you too. You can learn and develop new skills as you complete projects, and create stronger networks through working collaboratively on tasks with other volunteers. It’s a great way to improve your PR and marketing skills, meet others from the PR industry and use your experience for a good cause.

Convinced? Well, it couldn’t be simpler to get started. Visit www.brightworks.me, create an account and then read the different microvolunteering marketing tasks that charities need help with. If you can complete a task, click the ‘I’ll do it’ button and get going. It’s that simple.
